Translation initiation using alternative codons is one of the important mechanisms by which single mRNA gives rise to multiple proteins. Several examples have been found in which mRNAs naturally support initiation from non-canonical codons. nonAUG database contains mRNA sequences with non-canonical start codons collected from RefSeq database.

Currently, coding regions of 876 mRNA sequences from 51 species start from a non-AUG codon. This is about 0.04% of the total mRNA sequences available in RefSeq database. 95 sequences are highly curated and explicitly annotated to have non-AUG start sites. This database will serve as a repository for mRNA sequences that use alternate codons for translation initiation.

RefSeq release 44 totals nonAUG sequences to 876.
